30.January.2003
(TORONTO, ON) — The Toronto Lynx announced today the signing of two more key players to contracts for the 2003 season: 2002 Lynx MVP and team captain Theo Zagar and rugged defender Milan Kojic.

Goalkeeper Zagar returns for his sixth season between the pipes for the Lynx after a whirlwind 2002 season that culminated in his second team Most Valuable Player award, the first Lynx player to win the prestigious award twice. The East York native assumed the captaincy of the team in mid-June after Marco Reda’s transfer to Sogndal of the Norwegian First Division, and nearly led the club to playoffs after a slow 1-7-1 start to the season. The club went 9-6-4 in the 19 games with Zagar as skipper. He appeared in all but one of the team’s 28 games, and set single-season team records in saves, minutes and shutouts, all while preparing for his October wedding.

The 28-year old veteran joined the club prior to the 1998 season after a stellar career at the University of Toronto, highlighted by his capturing of the CIAU Player of the Year Award in 1997/98. He spent two seasons as the reserve keeper before wrestling the starting job away from Jim Larkin early in 2000 and never looking back. He spent his youth playing for the East York Soccer Club and the North York Cosmos, and was recognized as the Athlete of the Year in his final year at East York Collegiate.

Lynx opponents will be sorry to see defender Kojic return for his fourth season in a Lynx uniform. The 6’3 Hamilton native is known around the league for his punishing style, illustrated by his ten yellow and two red card performance in 2002, making him one of the A-League’s toughest players. He also showcased his offensive prowess last season, netting two goals and setting up four others, leading all Lynx backliners and placing him fourth amongst all Lynx scorers.

Prior to the Lynx season, however, Kojic will get a chance to showcase his talents in Europe, having secured a trial with FK Haugesund of the Norwegian First Division. Should he be successful and crack the lineup, he would join four other former Lynx players currently suiting up in Europe, along with Reda, Atiba Hutchinson, Chris Pozniak and Paul Stalteri. Forward Niki Budalic has also been trialing with LR Aahlen of the 2nd Bundesligia in Germany. The increased number of players moving from the Lynx to Europe underscores the Lynx’ commitment to developing local players and makes the club one of the premier squads in North America for identifying and developing local talent.

2003 TICKET PRICES AND PACKAGES ANNOUNCED
The Lynx also announced their 2003 ticket prices and packages this week. Prices are unchanged for the upcoming season, and remain the most affordable professional sports ticket in the city. Grandstand tickets for all Toronto Lynx home games at Centennial Stadium are $15 for adults, and $7.50 for youths and seniors. Groups can obtain tickets at a 33% discount through advance orders. Fans can order season ticket packages for $195 adult and $100 for youth/seniors, which includes all home games and an attractive gift package courtesy of Toronto Lynx corporate partners. Five-game Mini-Plans are also available for $75 adult and $37.50 for youth/senior. Mini-Plan holders receive a ticket to a sixth home game free of charge.

Tickets are available through the Toronto Lynx Ticket Hotline at 416-251-4625 ext. 31 or can be purchased online at www.onlineemailmarketing.com/lynxsoccer.

Perhaps I missed it, but did Theo sign a one year contract? I read an interview in an Ontario magazine that stated he wouldn't mind getting a shot to play in Europe... only if the league was at a higher level then the A-League. He said that his best chance for playing in Europe would be the Greek league.
