History: Moss FK
Formed in 1906 in a small industrial town on the south-eastern end of the Oslofjord, Moss FK were originally called Moss IF. They were renamed in 1929, but failed to have significant impact on the Norwegian domestic scene until the 1970s.

Seasons at the top
Moss first reached the top flight in 1953 but slipped back into in the lower leagues after a single season. They remained in regional football until 1977, when they won promotion to the Tippeligaen once again. Although they suffered a further five relegations, Moss nevertheless fought hard to establish themselves in the highest league and spent 19 seasons in the top flight, although the 2002 season saw them once again relegated.

Surprise champions
The club's best spell came in the mid-1980s, when Moss lifted their only two major titles. In 1983 the club won the Norwegian Cup, beating Vålerenga Fotball 2-0 in the final. Then in 1987, just a year after winning promotion, they caused one of the biggest surprises in Norwegian football history when they won the league title.

European adventures
Moss also enjoyed three campaigns in Europe during this period, losing in the first round on each occasion. They were beaten 4-0 on aggregate by Real Madrid CF in the 1988/89 European Champions' Club Cup, lost 6-2 to FC Bayern München in the 1984/85 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup and were defeated 5-3 by 1.FC Magdeburg in the 1980/81 UEFA Cup.

Eggen's influence
Most of the credit for Moss's achievements during this period was given to Nils Arne Eggen, one of the most successful coaches in Norwegian club football, and a man who later guided Rosenborg BK to a period of prolonged success. Other famous names to grace the black and yellow shirts of Moss were Nils Eriksen, a legendary defender in the 1930s, and Einar Jan Aas, who went on to play for both Bayern and Nottingham Forest FC in the 1980s.

Relegation woe
However, since that decade of success, Moss, under the guidance of Eggen's son, Knut Torbjørn Eggen until 2001, when he was replaced with Erik Brakstad, tended to struggle. In the 2001 league season Moss flirted with relegation before finishing tenth, but the following campaign was even less successful and Moss were relegated after finishing second from bottom.

2001: Tenth in Norwegian league.
2002: 13th in Norwegian league. Relegated.
