Major League Soccer drops overtime for regular-season games

NEW YORK (AP) - Major League Soccer is dropping overtime in the regular season, moving in line with the rest of the soccer world.

The 2004 season, which starts April 3, will be the first in the league's nine-year history in which draws will stand after 90 minutes of regulation. "Given the recent developments on the international scene regarding the resolution of matches, now is the right time to abandon the extra OT sessions," MLS commissioner Don Garber said Wednesday.

Players, coaches, executives and the league's competition committee all had input on the decision.

Sudden-death goals were recently eliminated from international rules.

From 1996-99, the MLS used a shootout tiebreaker. And from 2000-03, the league used a 10-minute sudden-death overtime. Forty-three of 171 overtime games - 25.1 per cent - were decided by a sudden-death goal.

TAMPA, FL -- United Soccer Leagues announced today that it is retaining its 'golden goal' overtime format for the 2004 season following a rule change by FIFA that eliminates 'golden goal' from overtime effective July 1, 2004.

"For a sizable percentage of our fans, 'golden goal' overtime provides an exciting bonus to the match with the potential of dramatic victory for either team a captivating possibility," said USL and A-League Director of Operations Tim Holt.

At the conclusion of the 2004 season and prior to the November 2004 AOM, the USL Competition Committee will reconvene to consider whether to retain overtime without the 'golden goal' format for 2005 and beyond. Their recommendations will be provided to the USL Office and the Executive Committee for analysis and ultimately a revised policy.

No more substitution shenanigans


MLS has also eliminated the fourth substitute rule for the upcoming season. The idea was to allow a club which had already used its three allotted substitutions to replace an injured goalkeeper with another goalkeeper, rather than being forced to use a field player in the position and thus be reduced to 10 men.

It was eventually determined however, that the rule possessed a glaring loophole, that allowed for a de facto fourth field player substitution, who would 'trade' positions with the keeper upon entry, and then trade back. There was never a need for this rule in the first place, and misuse made its elimination immediately necessary.

Bizarement, j'avais vu le logo de la fifa sur le maillot d'un arbitre.

Si c'est un arbitre qui a le statut international, et qui a déjà arbitré des matches Fifa, c'est normal
