19.April.2003
The Charlotte Eagles kicked off the 2003 season Saturday night at Providence High School facing the Cincinnati Riverhawks. Cincinnati, coming off a loss to Virginia Beach Friday night was able to squeek out a win against the Eagles with the 1-0 victory. Saturday night was the Eagles' first game of the regular season.

Charlotte and Cincinnati came out in the first half with hard tackles and tough play, but the rough battle for the first goal didn’t come. The Eagles had the edge on goal opportunities with three close chances, outshooting the Riverhawks 7-2. Keepers were even on saves, having one a piece.

Charlotte turned up the heat a bit in the second half, out shooting the Riverhawks 11-7, but to no avail. The one and only goal of the game came in the 73rd minute when Cincinnati's Edward Child placed a hard shot in the top corner of the net from 25 yards out. Charlotte continued to have the lead in shooting and quality scoring chances, but remained unable to put it in the back of the net. Eagles' coach Mark Steffens commented on the match: "Finishing the ball is continues to be our achilles heel. We create the scoring chances, but don't put them in the back of the net. If you don't finish the quality chances it comes back to bite you."

The Eagles played well defensively despite the one that squeezed through the cracks. Former Colorado Rapids (MLS) goalkeeper Matt Napoleon filled in for the Eagles in the absence of Richard Goddard. Goddard is expected to be in Charlotte for Friday nights match pending visa clearance.
