El Depor ficha a un centrocampista canadiense para la próxima temporada
El centrocampista canadiense Julián De Guzmán, actualmente en el Hannover 96, pasará a la disciplina del Deportivo de La Coruña a final de esta temporada. "Estoy feliz de que la decisión se haya tomado", dijo el jugador, de 23 años, al confirmar su fichaje.
De Guzmán firmará por cuatro años con el equipo español después de rechazar una oferta para renovar con el Hannover y varias propuestas de clubes ingleses. De Guzmán llegó al Hannover en 2002 y ha disputado hasta ahora 68 partidos de primera división con el equipo de Baja Sajonia.

Saturday 12th February, 2005 -- Defensive midfielder Julián de Guzmán (23) already has signed the contract binding him to Deportivo until 2009 and he looks forward to playing for the Galicians. Especially substituting Mauro Silva makes him feel “honoured”.
Q: Are you satisfied with the move being finalized?
A: It’s a dream having come true because I always wanted to play in Spain. And to have been picked by Deportivo is more than I expected and I am very satisfied with this opportunity.
Q: Why Depor and not Tottenham?
A: I had two options, and both offers arrived last months. But I think Deportivo were more interested and that option was more concrete. Besides, the Primera División I consider more attractive as the Premiership. It’s the best step for my evolution and I have always liked the Spanish game since I was young.
Q: What do you know about Depor?
A: I know it’s a club having performed very well at an international level during the past years. And they have some very important players, like Mauro Silva. I think they’re comparable to Valencia, or maybe even Real Madrid and Barcelona. They’re not only respected in Spain, but everywhere. In fact, I am very emotional about playing for them.
Q: And the city?
A: Some years ago we played a friendly there with Hannover, when we took players like Jaime and Fernando. The people seemed very friendly and it was fine weather. But I was told the other seasons are quit different… Nevertheless, the most important thing is that good football is played there.
Q: What other positions can you perform at?
A: In many matches at Hannover I had to play at the left and I felt fine there. But a defensive position in centre midfield suits me best. Playing at the wings won’t be a problem though because the only thing I want is to play.
Q: What does it mean substituting a player like Mauro Silva?
A: A big responsibility. I am honoured to occupy a position of such a legend. I know a lot will be expected from me and I’ll need one or two years to adapt. But Mauro Silva has been playing at Deportivo for twelve years and this I respect a lot. I will give all I can in every match and am very happy to play at his position, but it would even have been better if I could play with him. It’s a sad thing this isn’t possible.

The retirement of Mauro Silva was getting close when in January, 2005 news reports appeared about Deportivo being interested in a midfield player of Hannover’96. It concerned 23-year old JULIÁN DE GUZMÁN, of Canadian origin, who had performed very well during his three years at this club. One month later the deal was done and De Guzmán will start playing, on a free transfer, for the Galicians from June on. Others clubs seriously interested were Feyenoord Rotterdam and Tottenham Hotspur.
Mauro Silva was one year older when in 1992 he arrived in La Coruña. De Guzmán was much younger when Olympique Marseille discovered him at North Scarborough in Canada and took him to their youth system. From there the short player moved to Germany and started playing for Saarbrucken, before he was discovered by Hannover’96.
Over there he worked together with sports director Richard Moar, who previously had been working at Deportivo and after some years returned to La Coruña. It was Moar who achieved loan deals with several players of Deportivo (Jaime, José Manuel and Fernando), who became colleagues of De Guzmán. “With Jaime I became good friends”, De Guzmán said when arriving in Spain. Meanwhile, Fernando describes him as a “quit guy. But he was still young and had a big future ahead, he gave all during training sessions”.
Moar also mentions “he has a tremendous illusion. He’s a winner and on Sundays he performs like during training sessions. And for him it doesn’t matter playing against smaller of bigger teams. Despite being small he’s strong and has good technical capacities, and he’s very quick. He can play at several positions but his speciality is playing in the centre, like Duscher and Sergio”.
His coach at Hannover, Ewald Lienen, defines him as a “dynamic and polyvalent defensive midfielder. But he cannot be compared to Mauro Silva, because he has become world champions and not only has been a reference at Deportivo. De Guzmán is smaller but great in recuperating balls, and he has some incredible moves. He’s more comparable to Makelele, although one cannot expect of him to play very offensively or to organize the game. But I am convinced he’ll triumph at Deportivo because he has been one of the best midfielders in the Bundesliga”.
