YALLOP ANNOUNCES ROSTER FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIER AGAINST GUATEMALA

Ottawa, Ontario – Canadian Men’s World Cup Team head coach Frank Yallop today named his 18-player roster for the upcoming World Cup Qualifier against Guatemala on August 18 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, BC.

Yallop has selected 11 players from the squad which defeated Belize 4-0 in back to back games in the first round. Several of those players are now with new clubs, with Tomasz Radzinski moving from Everton to Fulham and Jason deVos signing with Ipswich Town. Defender Ante Jazic is now in Russia at FC Kuban.

In addition, Yallop has rounded out his roster with seven players from the Development Team which competed last month in Burnaby against Millwall and Hearts in a tournament hosted by the BC Soccer Association. From that squad, Yallop has chosen Montreal Impact goalkeeper Greg Sutton (who established a club single season record of 13 shutouts), Impact defenders Nevio Pizzolitto and Gabe Gervais, 17-year-old midfielder Jaime Peters, who has landed trials with Ipswich Town, Millwall, Derby and Manchester United; midfielders Josh Simpson and Adrian Serioux, who were both handed contracts by Millwall after their impressive performances last month, and striker Olivier Occean.

“I’m very happy with this squad as it represents what I feel are the players that are showing the best form at the moment,” said Yallop. “The players who came in last month were very impressive in their performances.”

The Canadians will begin arriving in Vancouver on Saturday. The team will train at Burnaby Lakes East at 2:00 p.m. on Monday and at 11:00 a.m. at Swangard Stadium on Tuesday. The game is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff and will be carried on Rogers Sportsnet (11:00 p.m. ET, 8:00 p.m. PT).

Yallop names roster for qualifying game

Canadian Press

8/11/2004

Frank Yallop's bid to widen the scope of the national men's soccer squad continued Wednesday as he announced his 18-man roster for the World Cup qualifying game against Guatemala on Aug. 18 at Swangard Stadium in Burnaby, B.C.

The Canadian coach included 10 of the 11 starters - striker Iain Hume of Tranmere Rovers is suspended after receiving a red card - from the team that beat Belize 4-0 in the opening leg of a World Cup qualifying playoff in June. He also called up midfielder Atiba Hutchinson, who was on the bench that day.

Defender Kevin McKenna (Hearts) and midfielder Marc Bircham (Queens Park Rangers) are unavailable through injury. Midfielder Jim Brennan (Norwich) is healthy but was not called on in what Yallop called ``mainly a coach's decision.''

Yallop has added seven players who were part of the developmental team that played club sides Hearts and Millwall last month in Burnaby.

``It was very encouraging. They did great,'' Yallop, who called the Vancouver games ``priceless,'' said Wednesday of the players from the development side. ``They can play at our level.''

The injuries to others did not necessarily open the door to the newcomers, Yallop said.

``I think that these guys have really pushed themselves in the squad and deserve to be there,'' he added.

The seven include 17-year-old starlet Jaime Peters, a promising midfielder from Pickering, Ont., who is working his way through trials in England with Ipswich, Millwall, Derby and Manchester United.

``I've known about him a long time,'' Yallop said. ``He really stood out in the camp we had (and) in the game we had against Millwall.

``I'm not just doing it because I think he needs experience or it'll be a fun thing to bring him in. I think he's a very good player and he will add some real quality to the team.''

Canadian under-20 coach Dale Mitchell calls Peters an excellent one-on-one player.

``Rather than hurt you with one-twos and opening up the game with his passing, he's more somebody that likes to get on the ball and run at people,'' Mitchell side.

``He has the ability to just seem to glide by guys. He's very smooth on his feet. He has good ball skills. He can cross and he can finish if he gets chances. And he's got a very good engine. He's naturally a pretty fit and strong boy. He's a pretty exciting player.''

Uncapped defender-midfielder Adrian Serioux and midfielder Josh Simpson (one cap) also get call-ups. Both won contracts with Millwall after the English First Division side's visit to Canada.

Goalkeeper Greg Sutton of the Montreal Impact also gets rewarded with a call-up. Sutton has a club record 15 shutouts in 22 games and sports a stingy 0.429 goals-against average.

Sutton will back up captain Pat Onstad (San Jose Earthquakes).

Goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld drops out of the squad as he searches for a team. The former Canadian No. 1 is currently training with Dundee United in Scotland.

``He needs to get playing games,'' Yallop said.

Hirschfeld started for the Dundee United reserves in a 3-0 win over Dunfermline on Tuesday.

Yallop also summoned Impact defenders Nevio Pizolitto and Gabe Gervais. Striker Oliver Occean, who plays for Norway's Odd Grenland, was also called in.

The Canadian coach is allowing players to play in club games Saturday, but asked for those with games Sunday to skip them so everyone could be in camp in Vancouver on Sunday.

``That was obviously a sticky point with some clubs but nothing we couldn't get through. All of the players I selected will be here,'' Yallop said.

The Guatemala game is the first of six for Canada in the semifinal round of qualifying in the CONCACAF region, which covers North and Central America and the Caribbean.

Canada, currently ranked 96th in the world, will play home-and-away series with No. 28 Costa Rica, No. 59 Guatemala and No. 79 Honduras. The top two in the group will advance to the final round of six teams.

Three CONCACAF teams will advance to the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany with a fourth team having a chance to join them via a playoff with an Asian country.

Notes: Midfielder Jason Bent is close to signing with Motherwell in Scotland ... Midfielder Darren Baxter of the Toronto Lynx and defender Nevio Pizzolitto of the Montreal Impact have been named to the A-League team of the week ... Six players with Canadian teams were named to the W-League championship all-star squad: goalkeeper Leisha Alcia and forward Rhian Wilkinson of the Ottawa Fury and Vancouver Whitecaps defenders Sasha Andrews and Randee Hermus, midfielder Andrea Neil and forward Amber Allen.

Line up possible:
Onstad
Stalteri-DeVos-Gervais-Jazic
Dero-DeGuzman-Hutchison-Imhof
