Canada Loses 2-1 to Honduras in Gold Cup Tune-up
Canadian goalscorer Kevin McKenna
Vancouver, BC – Canada’s Men’s National Team concluded its final preparation’s for the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup with a 2-1 loss against Honduras this evening at Swangard Stadium.
Canada’s inability to take its chances early in the game coupled with a five-minute lapse in concentration early in the second half led to a two-goal Honduras lead. The young Canucks pulled a goal back midway through the second half after captain, Kevin McKenna (Calgary, AB), nodded home a Sandro Grande (Montreal, QC) corner but that elusive equalizer never came and in the end, Canada walked off one goal short.
Statistically the opening half appeared even but the Canadians will certainly feel aggrieved at not being ahead after the opening forty-five minutes. Right from the start Canada seemed to cause the Honduran midfield problems with Sandro Grande and Atiba Hutchinson (Brampton, ON) dictating the pace of the contest.
The first series of chances occurred in the opening ten minutes. On two separate occasions, Josh Simpson (Victoria, BC) sent teasing crosses into the Honduran area that made the Central Americans look far from comfortable.
But it was Hutchinson that caused Honduras major fits when he ventured forward. The Brampton native, in the 22nd minute dashed from his own side of half then slid a well weighted ball to Dwayne de Rosario slicing across the top of the Honduran area. The San Jose-based striker waited for his marker to commit then cut back a pass toward the penalty spot for Hutchinson who had joined the attack. Hutchinson side-footed a shot on his first touch that narrowly missed the lower left corner.
Six minutes later Hutchinson was again in the middle of the action. This time it was Grande who found Hutchinson 5 yards from the top of the area. The elegant midfielder then looked off the Honduran left back and slipped a delicate, no-look pass to his good friend Iain Hume (Brampton, ON). Hume took one touch to settle the pass then hammered a shot toward the net but a well positioned Coello was there to punch clear.
It was shortly after (30th minute) when the Hondurans managed to finally hit the target. But the shot, like the other attempts on Greg Sutton’s goal in the opening half, were easily handled by the Hamilton-native.
Then, just as the half was winding down Grande launched a deep ball from well within the Canadian half for a streaking de Rosario. The Honduran central defender attempted to head back to Coello in the Honduran goal but his pass was a poor one and de Rosario was quickest to react. He outraced Coello, who had come well off his line in an attempt to get there before de Rosario but the Honduran ‘keeper just managed to block the Canadian striker’s attempt to round him. That save would prove vital in the end.
In the 52nd minute, and against the run of play, Honduras broke quickly off a blocked shot and with one deep pass from the Honduran right back, was in behind the Canadian back four. Francisco Ramirez made his way to the Canadian penalty box, held off a recovering Gabriel Gervais and banked his shot off the inside of Sutton’s left post for the opener.
Four minutes later it was two.
This time, Ramirez turned provider. The diminutive striker skipped along the left wing then served a magnificent ball to his strike partner, Wilmar Velasquez, stationed at the top of the Canadian area. Velasquez audaciously hammered his volley on the first touch and the shot rifled past Sutton who had very little chance to do anything about the strike.
Canadian Head Coach Frank Yallop then made a series of changes in hope of grabbing the equalizer.
Montreal striker Ali Gerba came closest in the 65th minute when he pounded a header from a Grande freekick that looked destined for the upper left corner but Coello, at full-stretch palmed the header out for a corner.
But the Canadians would finally be rewarded for its industry shortly after when McKenna rose high above everyone to grab a goal back for the Canucks five minutes later when he nodded home a Grande corner from approximately 10 yards out. The goal certainly energized both the 4000+ fans in attendance and the Canadian players themselves, but despite some half chances in and around the Honduran area, the Canucks could not find the equalizer.
Canada will travel to Seattle on the 3rd of July to begin preparing for its opening match of the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup against Costa Rica at Qwest Field on Thursday, July 7 at 5:30pm PT.
Canada will then play USA on July 9 at 1:30pm in Seattle before rounding up its Group B matches against Cuba on July 12 in Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, MA.

Les meilleurs joueurs selon les spectateurs étaient Hutchinson et Simpson. Quand on réalise que ce dernier est passé de joueur de la NCAA à partant en 2e niveau anglais (à Millwall) en si peu de temps!
