Canada announces roster for two-game series with the United States
OTTAWA (ONTARIO) – Canada’s men’s U-20 team announced today their roster for their two-game international series with the United States. Canada will play the USA in Ottawa on 3 June and in Kingston on 6 June. The two-game series is part of the Hyundai Canadian men’s U-20 tour presented by Yahoo! Canada.
With just over a month to play before the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007, both teams are in the final stages of evaluating their final rosters for the tournament. Canada has already played in three international friendly matches this year, the most recent of which coincided with the official opening of BMO Field in Toronto on 11 May. In the first three matches of the Hyundai Canadian men’s U-20 tour presented by Yahoo! Canada, Canada played Scotland twice (3:1 win on 24 March in Coquitlam and 1:2 loss on 27 March in Victoria) and Argentina once (1:2 loss on 11 May in Toronto).
Canada has invited 21 players to the Ottawa-Kingston series, although Jonathan Beaulieu-Bourgault will only be available for the 6 June match in Kingston. When Beaulieu-Bourgault arrives, it will mark the first time that all six of Canada’s ambassadors on the road to the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 play together. The other five ambassadors are goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, defender David Edgar, midfielders Jaime Peters and Will Johnson, and forward Andrea Lombardo. All six ambassadors were members of the last Canadian U-20 team at Nederland 2005.
After this two-game set, the sixth and final game in the Hyundai Canadian men’s U-20 tour presented by Yahoo! Canada will take place in Edmonton on 18 June. Canada’s opponent on that date will be Ceska Republika (Czech Republic). Canada’s first match in the FIFA U-20 World Cup Canada 2007 is 1 July (Canada Day) against Chile in Toronto. They play Österreich (Austria) on 5 July and the République du Congo on 8 July in Edmonton.
