Il est à noter que l'équipe canadienne de soccer n'utilise que des joueurs de la CIS et aucun joueurs de la NCAA (mis-à-part un joueur qui transfère de la NCAA à l'U de M cet automne, et un autre jouant à Simon Fraser à Vancouver (NAIA)).

WOW! Toute une performance!!! Voici un article (en anglais) du Blog de l'Universiade. Fait à remarquer, le Canada avait 3 joueurs du Québec sur le terrain et 2 autres sur le banc.

BANGKOK, Thailand -- Canada, a country that has never made it out of group play at the Universiade, is all of a sudden through to the semifinal round after a 1-0 victory over Great Britain at Royal Thai Army Stadium on Monday.

Nawar Hanna, one of the smallest players on the field, scored the goal - on a header, no less - that has lifted Canada into the final four, where they will meet Italy on Wednesday.

The University of Montreal medical student came into the box late on an Adam Legg corner kick and hammered home the winner in the 86th minute.

"Definitely, this is one of my best goals," said a beaming Hanna, who said he can count on his fingers the number of times he has tallied with his head. "Maybe not the most beautiful, but the most celebrated one.

"Usually I don't go in the box for set pieces. This time, I don't know why, just by instinct, I told Mike [Elliot], 'Stay back, I'll go,' and maybe they didn't see me coming. It was a great ball from Adam, right on my head, and I just had to put it in the goal."

Italy beat Japan 4-3 on penalty kicks today, while Thailand and Ukraine will meet in the other semifinal. The host Thais beat Mexico 1-0 and Ukraine slipped past Uruguay 2-1.

Canada has come a long way since its opener, a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Thailand. They stayed alive with a 1-0 win over the Czechs and then advanced out of their group with a 2-1 victory over Ireland to set up today's quarterfinal match.

At the 2003 Universiade in Korea, Canada placed 15th. Only the top eight teams are automatically invited back for the following Games and Canada was left off the list for Turkey in 2005.

"Leaving home, nobody would have ever believed that we could play for a medal," said head coach Pat Raimondo, "and now we're in a position to do that. Our number one objective was top eight and now what a hard-fought battle to pull this one off late in the game. The boys are doing tremendously. They're doing everything they need to do to give themselves a chance and they deserve a hell of a lot of credit."

Goalkeeper Haidar Al-Shaibani of London, Ont., looked confident in earning his second shutout in as many appearances, and Canada continued to get strong performances from its back line on out.

The Canadians switched things up a bit Monday, going with three at the back and five in the midfield, making it tough going for Great Britain in the middle of the park and forcing them to hit over the top.

"We made some changes to the lineup, changed the formation and the boys responded," said Raimondo. "They accept what the coaching staff gives them and they put their heads down and they work. These guys are heroes to me. I'm so proud of this group."

Je pense qu'ils doivent venir (avoir un passeport) du pays représenté sinon des joueurs comme LeGoff (U de M) et Michel Mana Nga (Laval) auraient été sélectionné ou au moins invité au camp d'entraînement.

Johan LeGoff aurait été un partant... sans aucun doute.

Je ne sais pas mais c'est un putain de bon joueur....

Je voudrais bien savoir à quel niveau il a joué lorsqu'il était en Europe?

C'est un français qui joue donc à l'université de Montréal si j'ai bien saisi et il a de l'avenir . Intéressant.

Exactement. Il joue avec Outremont, tout comme Pascal Aoun et Nawar Hanna, tous deux aux Universiades.

seulement en CFA, j'aurais cru qu'il aurait jouer au moins en National. Il a été développé où? Dans un centre de formation de Ligue 1 ou 2?

Qqn sait à quel niveau Mana Nga de l'université Laval a joué?

Quelle position, Legoff? J'ai vu jouer Outremont, je n'ai rien remarqué de particulier. Il était peut-être en congé....

Normalement, milieu de terrain central.

C'est peut-être le seul joueur d'Outremont que j'ai remarqué en fin de semaine, conserve bien le ballon en tout cas.

L’athlète de 23 ans originaire de Paris a pris part aux 12 rencontres de la saison régulière et a reçu le titre de joueur du match à 7 reprises. Au cours de cette période, il a amassé 4 passes décisives.
