SUTTON, GERVAIS HONOURED BY A-LEAGUE AND IMPACT

LAVAL, September 16, 2004 — Impact goalkeeper Greg Sutton and his teammate, defender Gabriel Gervais, won two trophies each at the 2004 A-League Championship Banquet, Thursday evening at the Sheraton Laval, as the A-League and Impact team individual awards were handed out. Sutton won the 2004 A-League Most Valuable Player award and was also crowned the Impact’s Defensive Player of the Year, while Gervais was awarded the Giuseppe-Saputo Trophy, given to the Impact’s team MVP, in addition to being named 2004 A-League Defender of the Year.

The other Montreal team awards were given out to midfielders Sandro Grande, honoured as the Newcomer of the Year, and Zé Roberto, who won the Unsung Hero award.

"It’s recognition for players who have shown leadership and consistency on and off the field," said Impact head coach Nick DeSantis, who was a finalist in the 2004 A-League Coach of the Year category. "It’s also a reflection of the season we’ve had."

The A-League recognized Bobby Howe as 2004 Coach of the Year, while striker Alan Gordon was the 2004 Rookie of the Year. Both are members of the Portland Timbers.

All A-League awards were voted on by coaches and general managers.

The A-League Championship is Saturday, September 18 in Montreal at Claude Robillard Sports Complex (7:00 pm, live on Fox Sports World, RDS, CKAC).

SUTTON AND GERVAIS, A DYNAMIC DUO
Greg Sutton picked up 16 shutouts in 25 starts in 2004, a personal best and a team record. His 16 shutouts tie an A-League record, set in 1998 by Pat Onstad with the Rochester Rhinos. His goals-against average of 0.54 this season, the third lowest in A-League history for a season of 20 games or more, earned him the A-League’s Goalkeeper of the Year award for the second straight year. He was picked on the first All A-League team for the second straight year.

Gabriel Gervais, who started 26 games this season, was the pillar of the A-League’s best defence in 2004 with 15 goals allowed in 28 games. The club’s 15 goals conceded tied Rochester’s 1998 league record for the fewest in a season of 21 or more games. He also helped his team break Rochester’s 1998 single season shutout record of 18 with 19 shutouts during the regular season. Gervais was named to the A-League All-League First Team for the third straight season.

OTHER IMPACT HONOURS
Although he played at the position of defensive midfielder, Sandro Grande’s vision of the play on the field allowed him to spark the attack with his long passes, while his booming shot made him a constant threat on free kicks. He scored four goals, including two winners, and picked up one assist. He was picked on the first All A-League team in his first season in North America after a stint as a professional player in Italy.

A real locomotive in the midfield, Zé Roberto started 22 games and helped the Impact defensive line with his determination by slowing down the opponent constantly, as shown by his total of 65 fouls committed (4th in the A-League). He also contribued to the offence with two goals, including one game winner. He won the team’s Newcomer of the Year award in 2002.

OTHER A-LEAGUE HONOURS
The Timbers’ only head coach, Bobby Howe had a breakout season, leading the club to a team-best 18-7-3 mark for the regular season league title. The Timbers led the league in offense with 58 goals on the season, 14 more than second-place Milwaukee and Richmond. The team also ranked sixth in the league in fewest goals allowed (30). Through four seasons, Howe has yet to have a losing record.

Alan Gordon, who was also a finalist for the 2004 A-League MVP award, was among the A-League scoring leaders early on, scoring six goals in the club’s first five games of the season as the Timbers went on to lead the league in goals with 58. He finished the season as co-Goal Scoring Champion with former MLS standout Dante Washington of Virginia Beach with 17 goals on the year. He was third in points with 35.

i agree. Like I said to someone else last night. The true winners of the awards will be known Saturday night. And the portland coach even said that last night. Something to the effect of, I like my trophy and all, but i would give it up to be playing in the game saturday night.

Winning the cup is the only award anyone needs.
