IMPACT LOSES 1-0 TO PITTSBURGH
Derek Potteiger scores the winner at the 4th minute of overtime
MONTREAL — A goal by Derek Potteiger at the fourth minute of overtime gave the Pittsburgh Riverhounds a 1-0 victory against the Montreal Impact, Wednesday, in front of 6,183 spectators at Claude Robillard Stadium.
Taking advantage of traffic in the penalty area, Potteiger took a low shot to the right of goalkeeper Greg Sutton to score the game-winning goal. Potteiger also forced Sutton to make his biggest save of the game at the 66th minute, when the Impact ‘keeper dove to his right to deflect the ball out of harm’s way.
"They simply outworked us," said Impact head coach Bob Lilley. "We didn’t do the little things that make the difference. They wanted it more."
Mauro Biello and Martin Nash were the most dangerous players on the attack for Montreal, who lost the services of Eduardo Sebrango after only four minutes of play. After losing the ball, the Impact’s leading scorer turned around and twisted his knee on a seemingly harmless play. He was replaced by Zé Roberto at the 10th minute.
Biello came close to putting the Impact ahead at the 63rd when he hit the crossbar after dribbling past two defenders. He then saw a centering pass by Nash deflect off him towards the net, but wide, at the 76th. At the 88th, Biello’s shot was stopped near the goal line by a Pittsburgh defender.
"We were missing our target man up front, but we didn’t change our strategy," said Biello about Sebrango’s absence. "We created a lot of scoring chances, but the Riverhounds knew they had to come here, shut us down and wait for the counter-attack. That’s what they did and they ended up taking advantage of it."
"With Eddy out, it took the starch out of us because he’s a big part of what we do up front," said Lilley. "It’s disappointing to lose for the second time in three homes games in overtime. It leaves a bitter taste."
Montreal completes its four-game homestand with a 2-2 record and is 5-2-2 overall at Claude Robillard Stadium this season.
In spite of the loss, coach Bob Lilley’s squad remains on top of the Northeast Division, one point ahead of the Rochester Raging Rhinos. It was Pittsburgh’s fourth straight win and the Riverhounds are now only seven points away from the Rhinos and a playoff berth.
Veteran midfielder Nick DeSantis, who played 72 minutes before coming out of the game for Sita-Taty Matondo, reached the mark of 20,000 minutes played in the A-League. He became the first player in Impact history to do so.
The Impact will now hit the road for the first time in three weeks, to face the Silverbacks in Atlanta, Saturday at 6 pm. The next home game at Claude Robillard Stadium will be the Can-Am Cup final, Wednesday, July 30 at 7:30 pm against the Rochester Raging Rhinos.
