Canada Doubles Libya
Ottawa, Ontario – Canada’s Men’s World Cup Team today defeated Libya 4-2 in front of 45,000 spectators at the National Stadium in Tripoli, Libya.
Canadian Forward Kevin McKenna opened the scoring in the 18th minute before Libya equalized on a penalty in the 27th minute. In the 34th minute, Jim Brennan of Nottingham Forest blasted a 20 yard shot that beat the Libyan goalkeeper on the near post. At the half, the score was 2-1.
Two minutes into the second half, Canadian midfielder Paul Stalteri made it 3-1 in the 47th minute after a setup from Jim Brennan.
Libya with a penalty shot by Tark Al Taied made it 3-2 in the 59th minute.
Canada’s last goal came from Maycoll Canizalez who cut inside his defender and hit a low left footed shot into the bottom left hand corner in the 81st minute.
“We had a good overall team performance with four goals.” said Canadian Men’s World Cup Team Head Coach Holger Osieck “It was a very pleasant experience.”
The Libyan team included midfielder Al-Saadi Gadhafi (son of Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi).
Canada’s next opponent is Estonia on March 29 in Tallinn.
