Richmond Crosses Border
Take On Montreal In Canada On Sunday
RICHMOND, VA – (Wednesday, May 14, 2003) – The Richmond Kickers (2-2-0, 6 points) will travel to Montreal, Quebec, Canada this weekend to meet the Montreal Impact (1-1-0, 3 points) on Sunday, May 18th at Claude Robillard Stadium. The game will kick off at 4:00pm EST and is the Impact’s home opener.
The Kickers are just 2-4-0 lifetime against the Impact, including a 1-1-0 record in 2002. The Impact compete out of the Northeast Division of the Eastern Conference, along with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds, Rochester Raging Rhinos, Syracuse Salty Dogs and the Toronto Lynx.
In 2002, the Impact amassed a 16-9-3 record and tied for the Northeast Division lead with 72 points. Montreal defeated the Charlotte Eagles in their first round playoff match before falling to the Rhinos in the quarterfinals on a 0-0 aggregate score. Rochester advanced 6-5 in penalty kicks and went on to lose to the Kickers in their next playoff series.
Midfielder Zé Roberto, who is playing his second season with the Impact, scored both of Montreal’s goals Saturday in Toronto in a 2-0 win against the Lynx. His actions earned him A-League Player of the Week honors, which was announced yesterday.
The Kickers will return to the University of Richmond Stadium on Friday, May 23rd when they return the favor and host the Impact at a special kick off time of 8pm. The game will be shown LIVE on Fox Sports World. The first 1,000 fans in the gate will get a Kickers pennant courtesy of the Tobacco Use Control Project. Gates open at 7pm.
