When the Seattle entry into Major League Soccer was first announced, fans were told that they would get unprecedented access to the control and management of the organization. Those words were not hollow, as last week fans were given the opportunity to vote for what name they would like the team to take.
The choices offered were Seattle Alliance, Seattle Republic or Seattle FC. In addition, fans were allowed a write-in vote with which they could suggest an alternate name. Some 14,500 votes were cast, with approximately 50 percent of them using the write-in option. Of those that wrote in a vote, a little less than half voted for a name with a derivative of "Sounders".
Based on that, the name "Seattle Sounders FC" was chosen, in order to differentiate from past teams in the city with a similar name, but still keeping the Sounders tradition in Seattle.
"We have heard the fans," said majority owner Joe Roth. "We are excited about moving forward, and are committed to building a team that will make this entire region proud."
The first professional soccer team with the name "Sounders" in Seattle was born in 1974, an expansion team in the North American Soccer League, and lasted until 1983. The next incarnation came in 1994, and a team with that name has been playing since in the American Professional Soccer League, the A-League and the USL First Division.
While typically a write-in vote has little impact on overall results, in this case it chose a clear winner.
"We'll have a team that will play with the same passion the fans have shown in selecting our name," Roth said.
The current "Seattle Sounders" name is principally owned by part-owner and general manager Adrian Hanauer.
"The team playing at the highest level in our region has always been called 'Sounders,'" he said. "Starting with the NASL and then the USL First Division, we now have the chance to create a separate and distinct entity with the new MLS team."
"There is a great history of tradition with the Sounders name," said MLS Commisioner Don Garber. "I am convinced that a great new tradition can be established for the sport in the Pacific Northwest with Seattle Sounders FC."
The badge was carefully designed with the spirit of the organization, and the icons of the area in mind. The three layers of the organization -- the team, the community and the fans -- all factored in.
It is loosely based on the "heraldic shield" on which the coats-of-armor of families were painted so that the soldiers could be identified.
The community is represented by a sillhouetted icon of the Seattle Space Needle.
The fans are identified by a shield colored "Rave Green," where the passion of the fans is reflected in the choice of a "rave" color.
"Our fans are very passionate," said Vulcan Sports and Entertainment CEO Tod Leiweke. "We offered the public an opportunity to participate in this unprecedented vote and their voice has been heard."
The organization is represented by the shield that holds them up, which is colored in "Sounder Blue," a clear reference to the team name.
Finally, these are overlaid, united, and bonded under the team banner "Seattle Sounders FC," colored in Cascade Shale, with the color being chosen with the name "Cascade" in mind, evoking the spectacular mountain range to the east of the city of Seattle.
Seattle Sounders FC will begin play in Major League Soccer's 2009 season, a little less than one year from now.
