Re: Euro 2012

Blog: Euro sceptic
An easy win for Italy over the Faroe Islands, but Steve Wilson wonders if the Azzurri should even be playing such small fry?
A 5-0 battering of the Faroe Islands, following up the defeat of Estonia, gives Cesare Prandelli a perfect start to his Euro 2012 qualifying campaign, but is it time to re-evaluate how European qualifying groups are organised?
Across Europe last night we saw Germany hit Azerbaijan for six, Sweden netted the same against San Marino while the Azzurri grabbed their five against the Faroes. The less said about Scotland’s handling of Liechtenstein the better, but what are these minnows learning from their beatings?
When it comes to football I am an inclusionist and do not subscribe to the idea that these small nations have no place in the game. However, nobody benefits from the current set-up and a little restructuring could solve several problems in one swift act of bureaucracy.
Emerging nations learn nothing from playing defensive football and trying to avoid cricket scores. They would be much better served playing more games against nations closer to their own ability. And do we know anything new about Italy after watching them tear apart a team of Serie C standard at best?
My proposal would be to hold a pre-qualifying event. Each of the groups would be drawn as normal but the nations in Pots 4, 5 and 6 would play a round-robin tournament with the winner proceeding to the actual qualifying event with the top seeds from Pots 1, 2 and 3.
The benefits would be that small nations would get to compete on a level playing field, the best of them would still get to progress and face stronger nations and there would be less fixtures on the international calendar – something club managers would appreciate.
In Italy’s case this time around it would mean Slovenia, Estonia and the Faroe Islands squaring off in September and October – with Slovenia most likely qualifying. They would then join Italy, Serbia and Northern Ireland playing a maximum of six qualifying games.
It would also mean qualifying matches would actually be more interesting, in that every tie would pit teams with a realistic chance of qualifying against each other. While you might argue it is unfair that every nation would not have an equal chance to qualify, UEFA have already thrown fairness out of the window in European club football by forcing champions of lesser nations to pre-qualify for the European Cup so why should internationals be any different?
As things stand now European qualifying campaigns – and those for the World Cup – are becoming dull and predictable with only the scrap for the play-off spot holding any real intrigue. By altering the format UEFA could increase competition, reduce fixtures and help minor nations better themselves without constant demoralising drubbings. Worth a try, don’t you think?
