Canada Split Doubleheader with All Whites



Kelowna, BC – Canada’s U15 and U18 National Teams split their doubleheader with the Schoolboys teams from New Zealand on Thursday evening in Kelowna, BC. The U15s raced out to a two-goal lead in the series curtain-raiser but surrendered three straight goals to fall 3-2 to their Kiwi counterparts.

The Canucks exacted a modicum of revenge in the second game though but had to come back from a goal down to do so. Canada’s U18s went to the break down 1-0 but two second half strikes from Amuri Kapongo rescued the victory against New Zealand’s U19s.

Missed chances the story for Hart’s boys
Despite jumping out to an early (and well deserved) two-goal lead, Canada’s U15 National Team surrendered three consecutive goals off set-pieces to fall to New Zealand 3-2.

In fact, it only took ten minutes for Canada to pounce.

William Hyde started the move with a delicately weighted pass to Devin Gunenc who skipped past one defender at the top of the box then coolly slid his shot past the New Zealand ‘keeper.

Then Canada stretched the lead to two after a corner was swung into the New Zealand penalty area and striker Mohammed Sylla out-jumped everyone to head home.

But a combination of good goalkeeping, poor finishing, and the woodwork denied Canada the elusive third goal that would have surely seen-off the Kiwis.

New Zealand, sensing the match was slipping away, played far more direct and the tactic paid dividends. The Kiwis replied with three straight goals off set-pieces that the Canucks got to first but could not clear. In all three situations, New Zealand reacted fastest to the second-ball and when the chance to score presented itself, the Kiwis were clinical.

“I am happy with the way we started but I am not very happy with the way we gifted them three chances on balls that should have been cleared,” said Canada’s Head Coach Stephen Hart.

“This is not a game we should have lost and really should have put the game out of reach early. Having said that, New Zealand did well to get themselves back into the game but the goals they scored were on balls we should have dealt with. We will have to be better defensively on Saturday.”

Kapongo brace secures win for U18s
In the second match, Canada’s U18s fell behind after a little more than a half-hour (36), but two second-half goals from Amuri Kapongo secured the win for the Canucks.

New Zealand’s U19s surprised Canada when against the run of play, grabbed the opener through Garry McDermott.

Canada quickly went searching for the equalizer but had to wait until midway through the second half before finally breaching the Kiwi goal.

Kapongo started things rolling just before the hour mark when he slammed home his first goal for Canada in his very first appearance for his country. Four minutes later, the young Edmonton-native grabbed his second (and the eventual winner).

After the goal, Canada then solidified its defense with a few changes and always looked like the side more likely to win.

Both teams will use Friday to recover before facing New Zealand in final double-header of the series on Saturday. The U15s will get things started at 11am (all times local) at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna. The match between Canada’s U18s and the New Zealand U19s at 1pm will conclude the two-game series.

Canada and New Zealand Each Win a Game



Kelowna, BC – Canada’s U15 and U18 National Teams both split their two-game series with the Schoolboys teams from New Zealand when Canada’s U15s defeated the Kiwis 7-1, and Canada’s U18s fell 1-0 to New Zealand’s U19s on Saturday afternoon in Kelowna, BC. In the series opener on Thursday, Canada’s U15s lost 3-2 while the U18s defeated the All-Whites U19s by a score of 2-1.

The U15s, unlike the match two days earlier, capitalized on its chances when they presented themselves. The young Canucks raced out to a two-goal lead through goals from Randy Edwini-Bonsu and Cristobal Robles but the Kiwis managed to grab one back just before the break.

But the second half was all Canada.

Greg Smith stretched the lead back to two just two-minutes after the start of the second half then Edwini-Bonsu grabbed his second three minutes later when he easily converted a penalty.

Then second-half substitute Mohammed Sylla put the game out of reach with two-goals in two minutes.

Teal Bunbury finished the rout when he knocked in his first goal of the series in minute 79.

In the final match of the series, Canada’s U18s found New Zealand a far more difficult opponent.

The Canadians gave up a goal early in the first half and could not find a way to breakdown the Kiwi defense for an equalizer despite numerous chances throughout the remaining eighty minutes.
