MELBOURNE, May 18 (SW) - Australia hopes to host the Asian Cup in 2011, using the event as a springboard for a bid to host the 2018 or 2022 World Cup finals.

"We are very ambitious to host major events," Football Federation Australia chief executive John O'Neill said Thursday.

Australia could put forth a “compelling” case to host the Asian Cup in 2011, he said, using the regional championship as a springboard to hosting the World Cup.

The earliest such a bid could come would be 2018.

"We would be very keen to give it a crack in 2018, and if that doesn't work to put a stake in the ground for 2022," O'Neill said.

"The World Cup has been to America and Asia, and now it's going to Africa.

"The only area of the world that has missed out is the Pacific."

South Africa will host the 2010 World Cup with Brazil favoured to play host in 2014. London, who host the 2012 Olympics, are rumoured to be the favourites for the 2018 World Cup finals.

Je croirais qu'ils ont une meilleure chance que le Canada a moins de changements dramatiques.
