BERLIN, Jun 28 (SW) - FIFA released the list of referees that will be retained for the final rounds of the 2006 World Cup on Wednesday.
Of the 21 referees that worked in the first 56 games of the tournament, just 12 have been asked to remain and work from the quarter-final round onward through the final on 9 July.
Two of the most notable omissions from the list are England's Graham Poll and Russia's Valentin Ivanov, both who were involved in highly controversial matches in recent days at the tournament.
Poll's dubious moment came when he issued three yellow cards to Croatia defender Josip Simunic in their 2-2 draw with Australia, when he also chose to allow the Aussie equalizer that appeared to be offside.
Ivanov was in charge of the Round of 16 match between Portugal and the Netherlands that saw a record-equalling 16 yellow and record-setting four red cards issued.
After a very well-publicized bust up with Harry Kewell following Australia's loss to Brazil, German referee Markus Merk was criticized by FIFA for not taking action, but he will continue in his duties.
The 12 referees will continue along with their regular assistants.

C'était très prévisible que Graham Poll et Valentin Ivanov n'allaient pas continuer, mais je suis quand même surpris que Jorge Larrionda reste.
