Former Honduran International and MLS scoring leader joins Atlanta

In a dramatic move the Atlanta Silverbacks announced today the signing of star attacking midfielder Alex Pineda-Chacón to a two year contract.

One of the all-time greats in Honduran soccer, Pineda-Chacón played for legendary side Olimpia from 1988 until 2001, winning more championships that any other player in his country’s history. He scored more than 60 goals and added over 80 assists in league and cup play, including a Honduran league-leading 12 goals in his Most Valuable Player (MVP) season of 1993-94. Playing mostly as an attacking midfielder, he led Olimpia to ten league titles, five Central American championships and a CONCACAF Champions Cup title in 1988.

The 5’8” striker’s international career has also been stellar. A member of Honduran National Team for more than ten years, the veteran scored the winning goal in the 3-0 World Cup Qualifier against Nicaragua March 4, 2000. He also scored in the 1994 World Cup Qualifier against Canada and was the MVP of both the 1993 Gold Cup in Dallas and the 1996 edition in Los Angeles.

Pineda-Chacón came to the United States in 2001, where he has been a star in Major League Soccer (MLS), playing with the Miami Fusion, New England Revolution, Los Angeles Galaxy and Columbus Crew. He was the MLS MVP and scoring champion in 2001, scoring 20 goals in 31 games with Miami.
