Top Euro sides meet in US

Seven of Europe's top clubs are to play in a pre-season series promoting football in North America.
English Premiership sides Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United will all play matches against Scottish league leaders Celtic.

Italian clubs AC Milan and Roma, plus German side Bayern Munich, make up the teams in the Champions World series.

The series builds on successful visits by several clubs, including Celtic and United, last season.

United, who four months ago committed to a return visit, will meet Bayern in Chicago on 25 July, Celtic in Philadelphia on 28 July and current European Cup holders Milan at Giants Stadium, New Jersey, on 31 July.

Chelsea play three matches, against Celtic in Seattle on 24 July, followed by Roma in Pittsburgh and Milan in Philadelphia.

Liverpool will meet Celtic in East Hartford, Connecticut, on 26 July, plus Roma at Giants Stadium.

Celtic's final game is against Roma in Toronto on 31 July.

The tournament is organised by US sports agency Champions World and David McNally, Celtic's head of sales and marketing, says it will further raise his club's profile in North America.

"Our research indicates that we have over one million fans in North America and we will be undertaking a number of initiatives to build on these very strong foundations," he said.

"As well as running soccer camps in each city, attended by 4,500 American children, we will be offering members of Celtic's 'World Huddle' membership scheme the first opportunity to buy tickets for what are likely to be sell-out matches."

Last year's match against Manchester United is Seattle attracted a crowd of 66,700.

The Champions World series, which also featured AC Milan, Barcelona and Juventus, attracted 450,000 spectators and was broadcast to more than 70 million households in the US and more than 50 countries worldwide.

Celtic will be based in Seattle and Providence, near Boston, during their 13-day trip, which starts on 19 July.
