ROCHESTER, NY -- The Rochester Raging Rhinos lost Jonathan Bolaños for the season today when a MRI on his knee revealed a tear in the anterior cruciate ligament. Bolaños was to begin his second season with the Rhinos this weekend in Miami.

“Jonathan hyper-extended his knee in a practice recently,” stated Rhinos Athletic Trainer Dave DiPasquale. “We rehabbed him to get some strength back in the leg, but the injury was too much for him to play through. The MRI and further evaluation revealed a tear in the ACL.”

Bolaños was set to return to the Rhinos midfield after finishing the 2005 season second on the team with 14 points. He started 18 games in his first season with the Rhinos and was named to the USL First Division Team of the Week for Week 11 after scoring the game winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Charleston on July 2nd.

“He was a big part of the plans this year in terms of our style of play,” noted Head Coach Laurie Calloway. “He’s shown that he’s capable of scoring goals. I think we have a talented pool of young players and veterans at midfield that will be capable of filling the void.”

The 5-11, 190-pound midfielder’s speed was a key part of the Rhinos run into the playoffs. A native of Costa Rica, Bolaños spent the 2004 season with the Seattle Sounders after gaining MLS experience with the Chicago Fire in 2003. Bolaños also saw time as a member of the 2000 Costa Rican National team in the World Cup and was a member of the 2000 Costa Rican Olympic team.

The Rhinos will open their 2006 season on the road on Friday, May 5th in Miami against the expansion Miami FC. The Rhinos will open the home portion of the schedule on Saturday, June 3rd as they host the Virginia Beach Mariners in the first game to be played in PAETEC Park. Game time is 7:35 p.m.
