FC New York unveiled as expansion club for 2010

NEW YORK -- FC New York has joined the USL First Division, the top flight of United Soccer Leagues (USL). The addition of the club will expand the USL First Division to 13 teams for the 2010 season. The ownership group, led by New York natives Jo-Ellen Treiber and Doug Petersen, along with USL Founder and President Francisco Marcos, and USL Executive Vice President and COO Tim Holt announced the news today at a press conference held at the Yale Club in Manhattan.

Speaking for FC New York, Petersen stated, “We are excited to bring professional soccer back to New York. The USL First Division has established itself as a highly respected and competitive professional league in North America. Our group will rise to and relish the challenge of putting together an organization on and off the field worthy of the greatest city of the world. It is also our intention to announce a European club affiliate in 2009 to aid the club’s effort moving forward.”

“We are thrilled to welcome FC New York as the newest addition to the USL First Division,” said USL Executive Vice President and COO Tim Holt. ”Their ownership group’s impressive and ambitious plans to develop a complete soccer club with a strong international partner and privately-financed future stadium will boost the profile of our league in one of the world’s largest and most diverse markets. The conditions are right for FC New York to excite the soccer community, which has a history of support for top-level professional soccer. With the additions of the Austin Aztex and Cleveland City Stars for the upcoming season and the Tampa Bay Rowdies and FC New York in 2010, the USL First Division has added important markets and ownership groups that will strengthen the league for years to come.”

FC New York has a commitment with Hofstra University to utilize James M. Shuart Stadium and the state-of-the-art training facilities. The 13,000 seat stadium will host league and international exhibition matches. Plans for 2009 include establishment of their youth academy, hiring staff, player recruitment and indentifying sponsors.

The FC New York shield is representative of the Queens flag, which was adopted June 3, 1913. The blue background with a horizontal white stripe is symbolic of its first Dutch governor William Kielt, who acquired the area from the Native Americans. The area's first settlers are represented by the two flowers - the tulip, emblematic of the Dutch, and the double red and white rose of the English. The Queen's crown signifies the name of the county and borough in honor of Queen Catherine of Braganza.

It was also announced that the group’s advisory board includes fellow Hofstra alumni Jim Kilmeade, who was the architect of 1995 Long Island Rough Riders championship team in what is now the USL Second Division, USL’s top flight at the time. Former Rough Rider, NY/NJ MetroStars and Los Angeles Galaxy center midfielder Travis Rinker will also serve as an advisory board member. Other key advisory board members also include Mark Francis, a New York Financier and British Chartered Accountant, and Almut von Biedermann, an international business strategist of Munich, Germany and Alicante, Spain.

Est-ce que qqn qui connaît bien la ville peut dire où est situé le stade (aussi bien si c'est loin ou non du centre / de Manhattan, et si c'est plus au Nord, Sud, Est ou Ouest) ?

Le stade est situé a Long Island...pas mal loin de Manhattan.

James M. Shuart Stadium is a 15,000-seat multi-purpose stadium in Hempstead, New York. It opened in 1962. It is home to the Hofstra University Pride football team. It hosted the first Division I NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship game in 1971 and 2006. The Long Island Lizards used the stadium as their home stadium for part of the 2001 season and the full season in 2002.The Long Island Lizards are back at Hofstra for 2009. The stadium was named Hofstra Stadium prior to August 29, 2002. The stadium is also used every October for three nights for the annual Newsday Marching Band Festival where selected Long Island high schools perform in an exhibition style competition.

C'est quand même un stade universitaire, j'imagine que la "vraie" équipe locale tient à ses lignes.

Tout de même drôle qu'une équipe de Queens joue à Long Island. Tout de même moins farfelue qu'au New Jersey haha

Malheureusement je doute que l'équipe réussisse à bien s'implanter à cause de ça. Si ça avait été direct dans Queens en partant ça aurait aider je pense...

edit: vite fait j'ai regarder dans google maps le trajet du coeur de Queens jusqu'au stade et c'est 1h30 en transport en commun et 25 minutes en voiture.

et de Saputo à Hofstra, 6h30. C'est moins loins pour vous d'aller en dep à NYC que moi pour aller à Montréal!

Au départ on parlait de deux autres stades en plus de celui-là.
Le plus chouette était celui à Long Island, malgré les lignes, mais les deux autres étaient nettement mieux situés, un sur Randall's Island (en face de la 116e rue de l'autre côté de la rivière) et un autre à Manhattan, celui de l'Université Columbia (sur la 218e).

Le Cosmos a déjà joué au stade Hofstra et sur Randall's Island (au stade avant le Icahn).

Je regardais dans mon album de l'impact de 1996 et il y avait le "New York Fever" dans la A-league en 1996. Mais en 1995 ils s'appelaient les "Centaurs". Je ne l'ai jamais remarqué mais...Il n'y avait que 7 équipes dans la ligue en 93 et 94! Vancouver, Fort Lauderdale, Colorado, Los Angeles, Toronto, Montréal et Tampa Bay(Rowdies) . Et seulement 6 en 95! La MLS aurait du commencer avec ces équipes comme modèle de base et après continuer aves ceux d'aujourd'hui mai non....

Elle a demandé aux proprios de ces équipes (du moins ceux de l'Impact) s'ils étaient intéresser à faire le saut en MLS. L'Impact a dit non.

desole les amis mais qu'est ce qu'il y a en commun le FC NY qui lui vaut l'honneur de faire partie de ''La'' section du forum strictement a l'Impact, le nom le dit bien!... ainsi que tous les autres sujets comme Miami USL, USL Live etc etc etc... un peu d'ordre dans le forum messieurs les administrateurs!
