PUMPKIN16 a écrit :Très belle victoire !!! :D :D

SUDDEN IMPACT

Montreal slips past Battery with overtime goal
IMPACT 1, BATTERY 0

BY ANDREW MILLER
Of The Post and Courier Staff
If defense wins championships, it sure doesn't hurt during the regular season either.

Mauro Biello scored 15 minutes into overtime and Greg Sutton came up with a shutout to lead Montreal past the Charleston Battery, 1-0, in a steady downpour Friday night before a crowd of 2,965 at Blackbaud Stadium.

The Battery dropped to 1-1-1 (4 points), but remained winless at home during the A-League regular season. The Impact improved to 2-0-0 (6 points).

For the last two seasons, the Impact and Battery have been among the top defensive clubs in the A-League. The Impact allowed a league-low 21 goals last season, while the Battery gave up just 29 goals during their 2002-03 championship season.

The two immoveable objects collided Friday night and when combined with the rain, which was heavy at times, it came as little surprise that each team managed just seven shots on goal in more than 106 minutes of soccer.

"We knew what kind of match to expect coming in," Charleston coach Chris Ramsey said. "Neither team had many chances to score. We just lacked a little bit of grit that we needed to come away with a win. They'll be there in the end. Montreal is a quality club."

It was the Impact's final scoring chance, coming with just five minutes left in overtime, that proved to be the difference in the game.

Montreal midfielder Pat Leduc got the ball on the deep on the left side of the field. Leduc crossed the ball into the box and where it skipped past two Battery defenders and onto the foot of Biello. Biello calmly trapped the ball and sent it past Battery keeper Dusty Hudock for the score.

"I don't know how the ball got as wide as it did," said Battery defender Mark Watson. "(Leduc) seemed to have a good bit of time to get control of the ball and on a wet surface it skipped right across.

"It could have been anyone's ball. I wouldn't say it was a great cross. It just skipped through and right to (Biello's) foot and he finished it well. You don't want to take anything away from the finish, but it's a tough one because we worked hard tonight and you'd hope there was something more for us tonight."

The Battery played without three key players -- Paul Conway (foot), Ivan McKinley (groin) and Ted Chronopoulos (hamstring) -- but Ramsey wasn't about to make any excuses. McKinley, who was expected to play Friday, injured his groin before the game.

"I've got no excuses about injuries," Ramsey said. "The team was competent enough. We had some chances to score, we just didn't finish when we had those chances. There are no excuses."

Charleston had its best chance at a goal in the 71st minute when Justin Evans served a ball deep into the box.

Striker Greg Simmonds got enough of his head on the ball to force Montreal keeper Greg Sutton, the 2003 A-League goalie of the year, to make a diving punch at the ball and knock it over the goal post, forcing a corner kick.

The Impact had two chances late in regulation to win. Biello took a shot from just outside the penalty box that sailed wide to the right in the 84th minute. Five minutes later the Impact was awarded a free kick that Sandro Grande took, but Hudock stopped with a diving save to his left.

"We were just unlucky," Hudock said. "We had a little breakdown there at the end that cost us. It's always frustrating to lose games, especially ones late in the game, but hopefully we learn from it and go on from there."
