The two-year-old Milwaukee Wave United team will not compete in the A-League during the 2005 season, Wave vice president of soccer operations Keith Tozer and team owner Charles Krause confirmed on Monday.
The Wave's experiment to become a year-round indoor-outdoor club faltered due to slim attendance at Uihlein Soccer Park and the difficulties players experienced in making the transition from the indoor to the outdoor game.
Tozer said the Wave organization has offered to keep its $100,000 letter of credit with the United Soccer Leagues, in the hope of returning to the A-League for the 2006 season. Milwaukee is the fourth team to drop out during the current off-season, along with Syracuse, Edmonton and Calgary, reducing the league total to 12 teams.
The A-League is the second division of professional soccer in the U.S., the level below Major League Soccer.
USL vice president Tim Holt, reached in Tampa, Fla., on Monday, indicated his disappointment with the Wave's decision but said he was "optimistic" certain details could be worked out and the team could return in 2006.
"We do not have a leave of absence policy, and that's what they're asking," he said.
Holt said league teams faced an Aug. 1 deadline to commit for the 2005 season and that Wave officials did not inform the USL of their plans to exit until after that deadline had passed.
The club's decision means the end of an 11-year run of professional outdoor soccer in Milwaukee. The Milwaukee Rampage operated from 1994 through 2002, winning A-League championships in 1997 and '02.
When the Rampage folded in early 2003, the Wave organization and then owner Tim Krause stepped in and were awarded a new Milwaukee outdoor franchise. Although the team posted an 18-10 mark and won the regular-season league title in 2003, it averaged only 2,099 fans over 14 home dates.
During the past season, the team struggled to make the transition to the outdoor game after the Wave reached the Major Indoor Soccer League finals. Wave United started with a 1-7-1 record and finished at 12-12-4, missing out on the playoffs.
The club averaged just over 2,000 fans per game.
"Last summer, we didn't cross all the t's and dot all the i's," Tozer said. "We didn't do everything we should have to sell it."
Tozer structured a number of multiyear contracts to compensate the team's two-way players, including stars Greg Howes and Todd Dusosky, and Krause said those contracts would be honored.
Scheduling problems also played a major part in the club's decision: The MISL regular season extends through late April and the playoffs through late May. The A-League opens play in April, although the Rampage and Wave United were allowed to begin in early May.
"We want to evaluate our options," said Charles Krause, who took his son's place as the franchise's primary investor this fall. "The concept is a good one, but the financial impact made it impractical."
Tozer said the organization would seek to play eight to 10 outdoor games this summer. He said the Wave would consider games against local and European club teams, and the Chicago Storm and Chicago Fire organizations could provide opposition.
Tozer admitted mistakes were made as the Wave tried to continue Milwaukee's outdoor soccer tradition.
"We learned that the outdoor crowd is a little different demographic than the indoor crowd," Tozer said. "People knew where we were, they knew there were games.

Cela nous laisse avec 12 équipes, donc 22 matches contre tous et 6 matches additionnels. Ça marche parfaitement avec les équipes de l'Ouest (4 équipes, donc 3 adversaires x 2 matches) et pour les équipes de l'Est (8 équipes, 2 groupes de 4 - à moins que chaque équipe N-E en voit une différente du Sud?).

Le calibre devrait être encore meilleur. C'est un peu un année de transition dans la a-league où il faut absolument solidifier les équipes en place...
