Charleston To Play Montreal In Home Opener
Charleston, SC. The Charleston Battery will play its first home game of the 2003 A-League season this Saturday night vs the Montreal Impact. The match will be played at Blackbaud Stadium, Daniel Island; kickoff is set for 7:30 pm. This is the only game scheduled with the Impact in the regular season. The Battery defeated it Southeast Division rival the Richmond Kickers 2-0 last weekend in the season opener for both teams.
Charleston Battery Head Coach, Chris Ramsey,
“It was good to get off to a positive start last weekend although we know that we have a long way to go. This weeks game is bound to be very difficult as Montreal have an excellent coach in Bob Lilley. This is the only game we play against Montreal this year and hopefully we can carry on the good work from last week.”
In 2002 Charleston defeated Montreal twice in two games played; both times by a scoreline of 1-0. In the first match, played here at Blackbaud Stadium Paul Conway supplied the winner. Raul Diaz Arce scored the lone goal in the return match played in Montreal.
Montreal is led by second-year Head Coach, Bob Lilley. In 2002 Lilley led the Impact to a second place finish in the Northeast Division with a record of 16-3-9, finishing tied for points with the division Champions, the Rochester Raging Rhinos. Montreal lost in the Eastern Conference semifinal to the Rhinos by a two-match aggregate score of one goal to none.
The Montreal roster includes 2002 A-League first teamer Eddy Sebrango. Sebrango finished the season tied joint 1st in scoring with 18 goals. The Impact also recently added two up and coming players, Sita-Taty Matondo, 18, and Chris Williams 21, both of whom are members of the Canadian National Team. Matondo played in Charleston last November with the Canadian U20 National Team during qualification for the U20 World Championships.
