Montreal-Rochester, retour...

Article dans le journal de Rochester. On y aprend que l'Impact a fait appel à la ligue au sujet de la carte rouge de Gervais face à Vancouver. Il a donc été en mesure de prendre part au match contre les Rhinos.

Goalie switch doesn't save Rhinos

Rookie Johnson starts in 0-0 tie against Montreal

STAFF REPORTS

(August 14, 2003) — MONTREAL — The Rochester Rhinos switched goalkeepers, but it didn’t bring them a win on Wednesday night.

Rookie Soren Johnson started in place of Billy Andracki, but Montreal kept Rochester’s once-potent offense off the scoreboard in a 0-0 tie before 9,414 at Claude Robillard Stadium.

“ We thought we needed something different,” said Rhinos coach Pat Ercoli, whose team has gone more than five years since its last regular-season win in Montreal. “ We haven’t had much success in our last six games, and Soren was working hard all season, so we decided to give him the shot tonight.”

Rochester (13-6-6, 45 points) leads Pittsburgh (12-8-4, 40) in the race for the second and final playoff spot in the A-League’s Northeast Division, but the Riverhounds have a match in hand. Montreal (16-5-4, 50) leads the division.

The struggling Rhinos have been looking for a more physical keeper since Pat Onstad left for the San Jose Earthquakes of MLS.

“ He showed some physical presence tonight,” Ercoli said of the 6-foot-3, 200-pound Johnson. “ Being a large keeper like he is, he tends to intimidate his opponents.”

Rochester could guarantee itself a playoff spot by winning its final three matches.

The Rhinos played a man down for the final four minutes after midfielder Temoc Suarez received two yellow cards in eight minutes and was ejected. Suarez got his second card because he restarted too quickly.

Montreal defender and ex-Rhino Gabe Gervais was supposed to serve a one-game suspension due to a red card on Tuesday, but Montreal appealed the decision minutes before the game to allow Gervais to be in the lineup.
Rochester’s best scoring chance came on Stoian Mladenov’s 18-yard free kick in the 15th minute.
