Sounders jell late, when it counts most
Montreal series follows 3 shutouts
By MATTHEW GASCHK
SPECIAL TO THE POST-INTELLIGENCER
Brian Schmetzer seems to have this whole head-coaching thing figured out.
For the third consecutive season, he has coached the Sounders to the semifinals. The season is beginning to mirror that of the run to the championship match last season, and the team is primed heading into tonight's United Soccer Leagues First Division semifinal match against the Montreal Impact at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
After going an entire month without a victory, the Sounders have churned out three shutout wins in a row.
"This team is peaking right now," Schmetzer said. "I thought we had a pretty good team early on, but we had some issues with guys coming back.
"That's a together bunch of guys ... they have been busting their butts for six months because they love the game and this is the reward."
The Sounders are a talented group that has struggled with consistency, but recently caught their stride with the addition of dynamic forward Maykel Galindo, who defected while in Seattle with the Cuban national team at the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July.
"I am a religious guy," Schmetzer said. "Thank God for Maykel Galindo. Through fate or whatever, he had the opportunity to showcase his talents first through us. If he continues to shine the way he does, he'll get a chance somewhere higher than us. We are just a steppingstone for him."
However, like last season when the Sounders lost 2-0 in a one-game championship in Montreal without the services of Welton, the Sounders will be without Galindo on Sunday when they head to Quebec for the second game of the home-and-home, aggregate-goal series.
Because his birth certificate and passport are still with the Cuban national team, Galindo will not be able to travel to Canada.
Galindo ne sera pas à Montréal dimanche.

Bonne nouvelle
