MONTRÉAL – L’Impact de Montréal a annoncé, lundi, que le milieu de terrain américain Tony Donatelli a accepté une prolongation de contrat de deux ans, soit jusqu’au 31 octobre 2010, entente qui doit être approuvée par la ligue. « Je suis très heureux de demeurer avec l’Impact, une organisation de première classe et une équipe de grande qualité, a déclaré Donatelli. Je suis heureux d’être à Montréal et je me sens bien dans ce club. Les partisans sont derrière l’équipe et c’est motivant. Il nous reste encore deux matchs importants à disputer dans la Ligue des Champions de la CONCACAF, mais je veux aussi aider l’équipe dans le futur. »

Acquis le 30 juin dernier des Whitecaps de Vancouver, Donatelli a terminé la saison régulière en tête des buteurs de l’équipe avec quatre buts, à égalité avec l’attaquant Roberto Brown, en 16 matchs (902 minutes). En cinq matchs disputés dans la Ligue des Champions de la CONCACAF, il a également inscrit trois buts, dont un doublé dans un gain de 4-1 contre Joe Public FC, le 8 octobre dernier, à Trinité-et-Tobago.

« C’est un jeune joueur (24 ans) qui a beaucoup de qualités et qui a tout pour devenir un joueur dominant dans notre ligue, a déclaré le directeur technique de l’Impact Nick De Santis. Il a déjà marqué des buts importants pour le club. C’est un joueur qui se positionne bien sur le terrain, ce qui lui permet d’avoir d’excellentes chances de marquer. »

« Nous sommes heureux de l’avoir dans l’alignement pour au moins les deux prochaines années, a mentionné l’entraîneur-chef John Limniatis. Tony a su s’adapter rapidement à notre style de jeu et à ses nouveaux coéquipiers. Il a beaucoup de potentiel, alors on s’attend à encore plus de lui au cours des années à venir.»

L’attaquant camerounais Jules Bertrand Bingana, du club allemand SV Darmstadt 98, est actuellement à l’essai avec l’Impact.

« Nous sommes toujours à la recherche de joueurs qui pourraient combler certaines positions, a déclaré De Santis C’est une bonne période pour voir des joueurs d’un bon niveau. »

Sa fiche n'est pas reluisante non plus.. un attaquant qui ne marque que 4 fois en 34 matches (étalés sur 3-4 ans) dans des ligues "régionales", y'a pas de quoi s'exciter.

When Toronto FC signed Canadian defender Adam Braz prior to the 2007 Major League Soccer season, the hope was that the Montreal native would provide a stabilizing presence on defence as the expansion franchise found its feet.

It didn't quite work out.

Braz underwhelmed with Toronto, playing just 13 times (733 minutes in total) during the 2007 campaign. Bedevilled by injuries and a lack of consistency, Braz was publicly called out by coach Mo Johnston (now the team's general manager) and was let go by the club at the end of the season.

Braz signed on with the Montreal Impact in January, returning to the United States Soccer League First Division team with whom he won a league championship in 2004.

Since returning to Quebec, Braz, 27, has re-discovered his best form, helping the Impact reach the semifinals of this year's USL-1 playoffs.

He also played a key role as the Impact won the Canadian club championship (over Toronto FC and the Vancouver Whitecaps), and the Impact just need one tie in their final two games to advance to the quarter-finals of the inaugural CONCACAF Champions league. Montreal hosts Honduran club Olimpia on Tuesday (CBC Bold, CBCSports.ca, 8 p.m. ET).

It's been an amazing turnaround for Braz, who was deemed surplus Johnston and Toronto FC.

"Last year was tough and frustrating at times, but I never stopped believing in my own abilities," Braz told CBCSports.ca.

"I think the game is about opinions, and every coach and manager will have their own about certain players. You see it all over the world, but it's important as a player to have a lot of belief in yourself and never lose your confidence."

Braz explained that maintaining his confidence helped him when he returned to the Impact. "That was really important for me and I was able to come back here and win a spot with the Impact. We've had a great season overall, and I'm really proud to be a part of this team that's on the verge of qualifying for Champions League quarter-finals," Braz said.

Is he doing anything different now compared to his time in Toronto? Not really.

"It was just a change of scenery," explained the Montreal defender.

"When you don't have the success that you want, you evaluate yourself and maybe change certain things about your approach or what you might do on the field. In the end, I think coming back here really helped me out."

Braz is also proud that Montreal's success in the Champions League has made soccer fans realize that, perhaps, the gap in quality between the USL and MLS isn't as great they might think.

"There is a certain difference when you look at certain players that play in MLS, but overall, there are teams in the USL can compete at the MLS-level", Braz opined.

"It's easy for people to say that the MLS is much better, but those people are totally wrong. I can attest to that because I've played in both leagues."

They weren't supposed to get this far.

When the Montreal Impact lost 1-0 to Toronto FC in the opening game of the Canadian club championship back in May, it supposedly confirmed what every soccer fan in the country already knew: The Impact, who play in United Soccer Leagues First Division, couldn't possibly compete against a team from Major League Soccer, the top pro soccer league in the United States and Canada.

But it was the Impact who emerged as the winner of the three-team round-robin competition, beating out Toronto and the Vancouver Whitecaps, also of the USL-1, as they were crowned the club champions of Canada.

In doing so, Montreal earned the right to serve as Canada's sole representative at the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League, a 16-team tournament featuring the best clubs from across North and Central America, and the Caribbean.

It's been five months since suffering that loss to Toronto, and Montreal has kept proving the doubters wrong. With three wins and tie in four games, the Impact currently sit in first place in Group C of the Champions League with 10 points, ahead of Mexican powerhouse Atlante (five points), Olimpia of Honduras (four points) and Trinidad and Tobago's Joe Public FC (three points).

Coming off impressive back-to-back road wins in Trinidad and Honduras, the Impact only need to earn a tie in their final two games – including a home contest against Olimpia on Tuesday (CBC Bold, CBCSports.ca, 8 p.m. ET) – in order to advance to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Proving the doubters wrong
Defying expectations and silencing the critics has been one of the central themes behind Montreal's Champions League campaign thus far.

"We knew it was going to be tough and that we'd be playing against good teams, but we also knew that there's a good chance that they might underestimate us, and I think to a certain extent that happened," Impact defender Adam Braz told CBCSports.ca.

"Right now, we're one of the top teams in CONCACAF and that's a great achievement considering what people thought we were going to do in this competition. We knew we were going to give everybody a run, we knew what kind of team we were," added Impact midfielder Sandro Grande.

Solid defensive play has been the foundation of the team's success on the field. Including a two-game playoff against Nicaraguan club Real Esteli that it had to win to even reach the group stage, the Impact have conceded a measly two goals in six Champions League games.

Grande explained that Montreal plays a different style of soccer compared with other teams in the tournament.

"We play a European style – well-organized defensively," the Montreal native said. "When we have a chance to go forward we attack, and when we defend we defend with nine guys. If you look at the UEFA Champions League, a lot of games end 0-0 because of this.

"Our success is due to the fact we're well-organized, we know our strengths and weakness, and we try to work together at all times."

Braz concurs: "Defensively, we try to be a compact and make it hard for the opposition, limit certain spaces. … We try to get players back behind the ball and clog up areas, and then when we win the ball we try to push it forward and use the transition game to our advantage because we have a lot of speed."

Jordan solid between the posts
Braz, also a Montreal native, believes goalkeeper Matt Jordan has played a major role in helping the team maintain an unbeaten record in the competition.

"He's very vocal back there and helps the defenders a lot. We know if we do give up a scoring chance, there's a good possibility he'll come up with big save. He's done a great job for us. We have total confidence in him," said Braz, who played for Toronto FC last year.

Indeed, Jordan has been brilliant for Montreal.

After a 2-0 loss to the Impact in Montreal on Sept. 17, Joe Public FC coach Keith Griffith boasted that "the next time we meet the Impact at home, we'll beat them by four goals clear, for sure," before adding that Jordan "can't be that brilliant again."

But while opponents are awe-struck by Jordan's sheer athleticism and penchant for making acrobatic saves, Grande has been impressed with the American goalkeeper's concentration level and ability to stay focused at all times.

"I think sometimes it's harder to play for a team like us when you don't face as many shots as you normally do with another team. When you face one or two scoring chances, you know they're going to be good, so you have to be on your toes and Matt has been great for us," Grande said.

"We're very lucky to have a guy like Matt in goal."

Grande concedes that there is a noticeable gap between the two leagues, pointing out that MLS can attract top foreign players the calibre of David Beckham, Juan Pablo Angel and Cuauhtemoc Blanco that the USL could only dream of landing.

However …

"Any USL team can beat any MLS team on any given day. Over a long season, maybe not, but in a tournament like the Champions League, where you only have six games, any USL team can beat a MLS team," Grande said.

As for Montreal's future in the Champions League, both Braz and Grande admit there's a buzz in the Impact locker-room these days, but none of the players are taking for granted that the team will qualify for the quarter-finals.

"We know the job's not done. There are two games left and we know we have to get a result in one of them to assure qualification," Braz said.

"We have to play [Tuesday's game against Olimpia] like we did all the others and be ready to work hard. We beat them in Honduras and I think we can beat them at home. We showed that we're not less than anybody else, but we would make a big mistake if we thought we are favourites going into the match," Grande warned.

Pour leur dernier match local de la saison, il y a des équipes qui distribuent des casquettes ou encore des t-shirts à leurs partisans. L’Impact a beaucoup mieux à offrir pour sa dernière sortie au stade Saputo en 2008: une qualification pour les quarts de finale de la Ligue des Champions de la CONCACAF.


Après sa promenade sur le terrain du Joe Public FC, les Montréalais sont passés très près de la qualification. Mais une égalisation du CD Olimpia dans les dernières minutes face à Atlante a repoussé ce grand plaisir.

Jusqu’à mardi soir peut-être. Pour ce faire, l’Impact, la meilleure équipe de la phase de groupes, peut se contenter du point du match nul ou espérer que le Joe Public accroche ou batte Atlante. Comme au match aller.

Adversaire guère menaçant

C’était dans l’inconnu que les deux équipes s’étaient affrontées à Tegucigalpa le 1er octobre dernier.

Malgré les appréhensions, il est vite apparu que l’Impact était mieux préparé et globalement plus fort que son adversaire. Rapidement en avance, l’Impact avait contrôlé les attaquants honduriens, ne cédant que sur un coup franc de 20 mètres.

Cette fois, le CD Olimpia sait à quoi s’attendre et connaît le style de l’Impact. Sauf qu’il ne peut pas se permettre de jouer prudemment et de calculer. Au pied du mur avec un point de retard sur Atlante, les Honduriens devront attaquer et tout miser pour quitter Montréal avec une victoire. Et puisque l’hermétisme défensif n’est pas le point fort du football d’Amérique Centrale, on peut s’attendre à quelques brèches dans lesquelles Placentino et Gjertsen vont tenter de se faufiler victorieusement.

-Comme d’habitude, le match est diffusé en direct sur Bold TV et sur radio-canada.ca/sports. CBC et la SRC montreront la rencontre en différé autour de minuit.

-Les saisons de Gabriel Gervais (caillot de sang), Patrick Leduc (cheville) et David Testo (hernie sportive) sont terminées.

-Tony Donatelli a signé un contrat de deux ans avec l’Impact lundi. Voilà un échange qui satisfait tout le monde en fin de compte. Charles Gbeke, acquis par les Whitecaps dans la transaction, a été décisif en séries alors que Tony Donatelli cadre parfaitement dans le schéma tactique montréalais, tout en vitesse. Souvenez-vous de sa performance face au Joe Public.

-Il reste encore de bons billets pour la rencontre. Faites fi du froid et venez donc saluer les joueurs pour la dernière fois. Parlant de froid, il ne devrait pas faire plus de cinq degrés durant la rencontre. Et avec de la pluie en plus. L’avantage du terrain n’est pas que populaire, il peut aussi être météorologique.

CBC semble vraiment prendre au sérieux la couverture de la LDC.

“Impacto” final para Olimpia

CANADA.- Olimpia quedó eliminado de la “Concachampions” al empatar 1-1 contra el Montreal Impact, en un partido que se disputó en el Saputo Stadium de Montreal, Canadá. El resultado clasificó al equipo canadiense como primero del grupo con 11 puntos mientras que el cuadro hondureño quedó con 5.

En el otro partido del Grupo C, que se disputó ayer en México, el Atlante derrotó 2-0 al Joe Public, el cuadro mexicano llegó a 8 puntos, mismos que lo clasificaron a la siguiente fase.
El adiós olimpista en la competición corresponde a las bases en que se juega este torneo de Concacaf, ya que el primer criterio de eliminación es la serie particular entre los clubes, y aunque los hondureños pueden llegar a 8 puntos, Olimpia perdió la serie ante el Atlante (1-0, en el primer partido en Cancún y empató 1-1 en Tegucigalpa).

El estratega olimpista, Juan de Dios Castillo, consciente de su responsabilidad de sumar de a tres envió a un equipo que en la práctica lucía ofensivo, con Wilmer Velásquez en punta, más atrás ubicó a Ramiro Bruschi, Ramón Núñez y Danilo Turcios.

El Impact salió con algunas variantes como Sandro Grande en el mediocampo y aprovechando la efectividad del pañameño Roberto “Bombardero“ Brown, quien hizo el daño mortal.
El primer cuarto de hora de juego completamente aburrido, ni Olimpia ni el Montreal Impact, arriesgaban, mucha jugada de mediocampo y pocos avances de ambos equipos.

A los 23 Wilmer se dignó a probar al meta canadiense Matt Jordan en una jugada que originó desde el mediocampo Ramón Núñez, el “Matador” evitando marcas logró llegar al área, remató fuerte pero el tiro salió elevado.

Olimpia controlaba el balón, prácticamente no se lo “prestaba” al Impact, sin embargo este dominio en la primera media hora de juego fue estéril.

A los 39 minutos cae el gol del Impact, mediante una jugada de Grande que entró al área, el meta olimpista Noel Valladares salió para achicar, sin embargo Grande logró enviar centro para que llegara justo y preciso Roberto Brown y de media vuelta anotara el 1-0.

Cuando el primer tiempo agonizaba y en una jugada de contragolpe, Wilmer Velásquez, controló el esférico cerca del medio campo, observó la corrida de Bruschi, quien encaró al portero canadiense Jordan, el uruguayo inteligentemente le hizo el “globito” enviando el balón al fondo de las redes para poner el 1-1.

Recién iniciado el segundo tiempo, el Impact salió “furioso”, y en una serie de remates después de un tiro de esquina, estuvo a punto de marcar el 2-1, a no ser porque Rony Morales salvó de la propia raya de gol ante un remate de Joey Gjertsen.

Al alejar el peligro de su puerta, Olimpia contragolpeó, con Ramón Núñez por la banda izquierda corrió a toda velocidad, buscó al “Matador” Velásquez, que fue interceptado por la zaga canadiense, en el contra remate Núñez la elevó.

El segundo tiempo era un juego movido, de mucha emoción y de insinuación sobre ambos marcos. En más de una ocasión la suerte salvó al Olimpia del segundo gol después de peligrosos remates realizados por Grande y Brown.

Conscientes que el empate los clasificaba los canadienses no se confiaban, estaban muy bien parados en defensa y cuando se iban al frente metían en serios apuros a la defensa olimpista.

Bruschi pierde una clara oportunidad de anotar el segundo al minuto 80 al sorprender a la defensa del Impact, corrió en velocidad, logró ingresar al área, el portero salió y quedó tendido, pero el remate del olimpista salió ligeramente desviado cerca del poste derecho.

Los cambios llegaron, Juan de Dios Castillo envió en la delantera a Allan Kardec, en sustitución de Wilmer y a Boniek García que entró en vez de Ramón Núñez, sin embargo ambos no pudieron hacer nada para ampliar el marcador.

El partido llegó a su final, un final triste para los olimpistas que ven como el sueño de clasificar a la segunda fase y optar a llegar al Mundial de Clubes, se convirtió en una pesadilla.
