Ce n'est pas tous les supporters qui savaient qui elle était alors elle se pointe avec son écharpe de Portland dans une section de supporteurs Ultras de Montréal...Je suis pas certain que c'était un bon move de sa part...Par contre, c'est certain que ces incidents font vite le tour des forums de supporters à Portland et on se retrouve avec des commentaires de gens qui ne savent même pas ce qui s'est passé et commencent à dire qu'on est une bande de sauvages à Montréal...Il y a toujours 2 côtés à une médaille...

Lorsques j'ai appris la nouvelle samedi matin j'etais un peu choque. Apres avoir parle a certains qui etaient la vendredi je crois comme Francois que cette histoire prend des proportions qu'elle ne merite pas.

D'ailleurs on a vu cette fille a Toronto samedi et elle ne m'a pas semblee effrayee du tout. Lorsques nous sommes alles prendre une biere a la mi-temps elle etait a cote de nous mangeant un hot-dog geant. Je pense qu'il est temps pour Allison et les gens de Portland de passer a autre chose. In Friday's match report, I mentioned that there were some problems when I went to visit the "Ultras". Here is what happened, just so the record is clear.

I had been invited on one of the soccer boards by one of the Ultras to come over to the section and say hi when I was there. He told me to ask for him personally, so I had planned that out even before I went to the park. I had also been approached by a few other fans outside the park while we were waiting for the gates to open, who recognized my scarf and introduced themselves. They also invited me to come over to say hi. So during the second half, at about the 55th minute, I wandered over there and one of the fans I had met outside the park recognized me and greeted me, and we talked about the Impact, and soccer in Canada, and the Timbers for the next 15 minutes. The Impact scored a few times during this time and I cheered on the Impact when they did. I was having a great time.

I finally was able to identify the fan who had e-mailed me, so I wandered up to say hi to him and we talked for a bit as well. Eventually he moved on to lead the cheers so I stayed where I was, about half way up the section against the outside railing, minding my own business, just watching, and enjoying.

One of the Ultras who I had not talked to came down to me and asked me who I was, and what my scarf was. I took the scarf off (which had been around my neck the whole time to this point) and showed him the scarf and told him I was from Portland, he wanted to know why I was here, so I told him about my tour, and about trying to visit all of the A-League cities. He seemed confused and asked me if I was a journalist, and I said no, I was a fan and this was my vacation.

He walked back up to his spot but returned a few minutes later asking me more questions, about how he could get my scarf, and I thought he was asking about how we sold the scarfs so I told him we sold them at cost for $8, and had ordered 400 so far. I wasn't getting through, apparently, and he left again.

A few minutes later he took his flagpole and lifted the scarf off my shoulders while I wasn't looking, and I grabbed it as he attempted to take it away. I thought he was kidding but he clearly wanted it, so eventually I let go, not wanting to stretch or tear it, figuring he just wanted to see it.

But I was very surprised when he handed it to another fan, who took out his lighter and immediately began to try to set it on fire. He tried three or four times, for about 15 seconds, but it just wouldn't catch. It's acrylic, so it's not surprising that it wouldn't catch. But it wasn't for lack of trying.

I was a bit in shock, not knowing how to react to that, when the person who had originally snatched the scarf came down, stuck his face in mine, and told me to leave, that I was not welcome here. I asked him why I wasn't welcome here, but didn't seem to get an answer. He just went back up and grabbed the scarf again, and started showing it off to his mates and starting a series of "Portland sucks" chants that a few others joined in. I'm not sure exactly why they would hate Portland, unless it was for the 3-0 drubbing the Timbers gave them back in 2002, but I doubt he or any of his mates even knew the teams had even faced each other.

Not knowing what to do, but not willing to give up on my personal Timbers scarf, I talked to the person who had originally invited me there, and told him what had happened, and he went and negotiated with the person who had my scarf, and he returned it to me, not really saying anything, and I took my scarf and left. It was near the end of the match by this time.

But for me, it wasn't over, because whether deliberately or coincidentally, three of the "Ultras" who had been part of the group that had been chanting "Portland sucks" followed me as I walked around the south end of the field back towards the press box. The whole way there, I could hear them taunting me from behind, with a long sequence of "F**k Portland" and occasionally other comments in French that I couldn't completely understand, but I got the gist of the nature of the comments. Eventually I slipped away from them as I headed back towards the press box while they headed out.

Why have I gone into so much detail on this? Well, I wanted to be clear that I did not provoke anything here. I was simply and out-of-town fan visiting who wanted to experience the atmosphere in Montreal. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, it turned ugly, and now that I have had a day to think about it, there are only a few reasons I can think of why they chose to go after me like they did.


I'm an American
I don't speak French (very well, though I understood more than they thought I did. I did have three semesters of college French so I wasn't totally clueless to what they were saying).
They were causing trouble for the sake of causing trouble.
While I'd say #3 is probably the main reason, I'm sure all three had something to do with it. But it doesn't excuse that kind of behavior. If a visitor from another A-League team, one we did not have a rivalry with (like Montreal) were to show up in the Timbers Army with a Montreal scarf, just wanting to experience what we had to offer, I can guarantee that fan would be welcomed, given a beer, offered a scarf in exchange, and welcomed as a third-party fan who was a temporary Timbers Army member for the day. That is also how I have been treated in other cities I have visited.
But unfortunately, what this has shown me is that the Montreal Ultras are not like other support groups, that least in that respect. Some are just trying to be hooligans for the sake of being hooligans, and I can only think that these fans really have no interest in the success of the A-League, or even their own team. They are just hooligan wannabes who targeted me, and all I can say is you do your team, your support group, and your city a disservice when you go after someone who was there to give some positive exposure to your team and your group, and instead, well, you have a reputation to live down.

And to the 75%-80% of the section that did not take part in this embarrassment, I'm sorry it has affected the reputation of you as well because you are excellent supporters, the kind any team in the league would love to have.

I would only offer one piece of advice that we have learned very well with our increasingly large group in Portland (now up to about 150 to 175).

Make sure you police yourselves. It's important for the Impact. It's important for the league.

J'ai été invitée via un forum par un des Ultras à venir dans la section lors de mon passage à Montréal, il m'avait dit de demander après lui. D'autres, à l'entrée du stade, m'avaient invités à y venir aussi. Vers la 55e minute, j'y ai été, ai discuté avec quelques personnes et c'était très bien.

Un de ceux avec qui je n'avais pas parlé est venu me demander qui j'étais et ce qu'était mon écharpe. Je l'ai enlevée, lui et montré et dit que je venais de Portland. Il m'a demandé ce que je faisais là et j'ai expliqué que j'essayais de me rendre dans toutes les villes qui ont une équipe en A-League.

Il est revenu quelques minutes plus tard en me demandant comment il pourrait avoir mon écharpe. Je lui ai dit qu'elle coûtait 8$ et que nous en avions commandées 400. Il est reparti.

Quelques minutes plus tard, il a pris son drapeau (accroché à un bâton) et m'a subtilisé mon écharpe pendant que je ne regardais pas. Je l'ai retenue mais il la voulait vraiment alors, je l'ai laissée la prendre pour ne pas l'abîmer, je pensais qu'il voulait simplement la regarder.

J'ai été très surprise quand il l'a tendue à un autre fan qui a pris son briquet et a essayé à plusieurs reprises d'y mettre le feu. C'est de l'acrylique, alors ça n'a pas pris, pourtant ce n'est pas faute d'essayer...

J'étais assez surprise, ne sachant pas comment réagir. Celui qui m'avait pris l'écharpe est venu me dire en pleine face de partir, que je n'étais pas bienvenue. Je lui ai demandé pourquoi, il n'a pas répondu. Il est reparti, a montré l'écharpe et plusieurs ont commencé à chanter Portland Sucks.

Je ne voulais pas abandonner mon écharpe alors j'ai été parler à la personne qui m'avait invitée. Il a été négocier pour la reprendre et me l"a rendue puis est parti sans rien dire.

Par contre, avant de dire c'est ca les Ultras, des personnes que je penses qui ont fait ca, j'en repère un de mémoire qui est ultra. Je parlais à un supporter Lyionais des Bad gones pendant ce temps, alors je peux avoir manqué quelque chose.

Les ultras c'est pas accepter de la provocation et des insultes de la part de d'autres fans, mais c'est pas s'attaquer à une fille seule. Ceux qui ont fait le geste ont interprété la présence d'une écharpe de Portland comme de la provocation. Mon erreur a été de sous-estimé l'impact de sa présence dans notre section.

Mais, dans ces trucs-là, les gestes de quelques uns changent l'image d'un groupe au complet.

J'espère que ceux qui ont agi de la sorte se sentent mal et qu'ils vont s'excuser.

Faut faire attention!

Il n'y a pas juste des Ultras dans les estrades des Ultras! À chaque match il y a de nouvelle personne. Et lorsque tu vas dans une ville, avec les couleurs d'une équipe adverse, faut que tu attende à avoir des commentaires négatif et non des compliments. Dans le temps de la rivalité Canadien Toronto ( au hockey ) si t'allais au Forum avec ton gilet de Toronto, tu ne te faissais certainement pas dire " t'as un beau gilet de Toronto ".

Apres avoir lu le compte-rendu de Allison c'est tres regrettable en effet. N'etant pas a la partie de vendredi c'etait difficile pour moi de me faire une opinion. On aurait pu avoir un peu plus de tact avec elle. Ce n'est pas tres bon pour l'image de Montreal.


Pour ceux qui veulent aller lire les commentaires des gens de Portland vous pouvez aller sur leur site. Le mot FROG revient assez souvent. Je ne vois pas le rapport mais il semble que des grenouilles soient impliquees. Un autre dit aux gens de Montreal d'aller shager leurs women. Je ne savais pas ce que voulait dire le mot shag, j'ai cherche et j'ai trouve.


Si des excuses sont a faire elles devraient etre faites par e-mail prive a Allison seulement. Les racistes de Portland peuvent bien aller se faire f.......
Des debordements il y en a partout. Pas plus a Montreal qu'a Portland ou ailleurs.

Francois, le problème est que je ne peux pas faire des excuses au nom des Ultras sans l'accord des autres. J'ai exprimé le fait que je regrettes de l'avoir invité dans notre section, que j'ai pas pensé assez longtemps aux conséquences.

Par contre, c'est l'oeuvre de quelques personnes, et non du groupe. DE plus, il y a plusieurs trucs qui me laissent croire qu'elle a peut-être exagéré. PRemièrement, les portland sucks, s'ils ont été chanté, n'ont pas été chanté longtemps et fort. De plus, je n'ai encore aucun évidence de qui l'a suivi.. était-ce des ultras?

De plus, la première fois, quand elle s'est fait demandé ce qu'elle faisait là et tout, quand tu es dans une tribune comme ca (et c'est pas comme si elle ne connaissait pas ca) et bien tu peux t'y attendre.

Je serais d'accord pour des excuses privée à Allison à la limite, mais pour l'instant je ne suis convaincu de la necessité de faire des excuses publiques au nom des Ultras. Si elle exagère l'histoire et tout, va-t-on lui demander ainsi qu'au reste du monde de Portland des excuses de ternir notre image?

Merci des explications BOB. Je ne veux vraiment pas me mêler de mes affaires et c'est pas moi que veut vous dire quoi faire. C'est seulement que je trouvais important d'aller au fond de cette histoire pour que peut-être à l'avenir, ce genre de chose ne se reproduise pas. Je n'ai rien vu des faits mais de ce que j'ai lu çà et là, tous les gens extérieurs donnent tort au monde de Montréal
Faudrait éclaircir ça quand même...
Je suis tout à fait d'accord qu'il est totalement malvenu de se promener dans le kop d'une équipe avec une écharpe adverse, même si c'est une équipe contre qui on ne joue presque jamais (j'ai été avec des supporters de plein d'équipes en Belgique, juste pour me marrer, jamais je n'aurais imaginé y prendre mon écharpe du RWDM)
Maintenant, si Allison a reçu une invitation, il est totalement injuste de la chasser ensuite. De ce que je sais, certains ont exagéré et devraient s'excuser (en privé ça suffit).
De ce qu'elle dit dans son message, Bob, tu es pas le seul à l'avoir invitée, puisque d'autres lui ont fait la même offre avant le match. Quand ça a dégénéré, un de vous aurait dû aller lui dire calmement qu'elle ferait mieux de partir car ça risquait de mal tourner.
